A $449 Hat for Hair Growth Sounded Like a Gimmick. Here’s What Happened When I Actually Tried It

For three years, I took a hair growth supplement every single day. Some days twice, because I’d forget.

Before that, it was oral minoxidil, then topical Rogaine, then cold-pressed rosemary oil, thickening shampoos, and pretty much every treatment I could find.

None of it stuck. Not because I didn’t care, but because none of it fit into a life that already has too many things to remember.

Then, during one of those late-night Reddit spirals where you convince yourself the answer to all your problems is three comments deep in a thread, I saw people raving about the HigherDOSE Red Light Hat.

Now I know I might be cynical after trying everything under the sun over the years, but a hat for hair growth? I had questions. But the more I read about how different their red light therapy technology is, the harder it became to dismiss it as just another gimmick.

With my hopes cautiously in check, I ordered the Red Light Hat Starter Kit, which comes with the Hat, Serum, Brush, and Derma Stamp. Apparently, hair growth is a team sport.

Here’s what actually surprised me.

It Was Easy to Add to My Routine

Supplements sound simple until you’re the one responsible for taking them indefinitely. Half the time, I’m eating breakfast at my desk or skipping it altogether, so I skip the supplement too.

Rosemary oil was thick and sticky and meant remembering to apply it. Thankfully, the Red Light Hat asks much less of me: Make sure it’s charged, briefly use the stamp to help absorption, apply the Light-Activated Scalp Serum, then pop it on my head for 10 minutes. I’ve worn mine answering emails, walking my dog, and during Zoom calls.

Most of the time, I’m already wearing a hat to cover my hair on work calls, so swapping it for one that’s actually doing something about the reason I’m wearing a hat in the first place feels almost too convenient.

The Real Difference In My Hair Density and Thickness

II always assumed my hair loss was something I could fix if I just found the right supplement, the right vitamin; the right missing piece. Turns out that’s not how it works when your hair loss isn’t coming from a vitamin deficiency in the first place.

Mine was age, genetics, and a decade of stress finally creeping up on me enough that I didn’t notice until I was already thinning.

Supplements were never going to cut it. What actually made a difference was going after it at the cellular level, which is the whole premise behind HigherDOSE red light technology.

The Hat uses 650 nm red light, a wavelength that penetrates beyond the skin’s surface to reach the tissue around the hair follicles. There are a million red light devices out there nowadays that don’t use legitimate technology, so knowing that HigerDOSE uses research-backed methods was another standout. Did I mention it’s also FDA-cleared?

The best part for me is that it’s not adding something my body was missing; it’s boosting blood flow to the follicles that were already there, just running low on fuel.

I gave it the full 16 weeks before I let myself get excited.

By the end, my part line looked different in a way I could actually see in photos, not just convince myself of in the mirror.

HigherDOSE’s own testing backs up what I was seeing: 86% of users saw hair growth in that same window, and 83% saw it specifically in sparse or thinning areas, which is exactly where I’d written myself off. Guess that guy on Reddit wasn’t lying.

I Felt Confident Without a Hat On My 40th Birthday

Turning 40 hit differently than I expected. I spent most of the lead-up avoiding photos. Reaching for a baseball cap every time I left the house.

By the time the actual day rolled around, I skipped the cap. Not because my hair was suddenly perfect, but because it looked like mine again instead of something I was trying to hide.

The serum and roller that come in the Red Light Hat Starter Kit have really maximized the results.

HigherDose’s serum is specifically formulated to complement the hat; it uses ingredients such as copper peptides, rosemary, green tea, and hyaluronic acid to support scalp health and promote fuller-looking hair.

What Didn’t Make the Highlight Reel

While this is a product I love, there are a few things worth calling out.

The derma stamp instructions are a few short lines on the back of the box, not much to go on. If you’ve used one before, you’re fine. If not, go slow. Press straight down in short taps, don’t roll it like a dermaroller, and don’t press hard enough to leave marks. I found that out the hard way and had some mild irritation.

My hair fell out a little more the first month before new growth came in. It happened to me, and it’s not reassuring when your hairline is already the worry. Turns out it’s normal; weaker hairs make room for stronger ones, but I wish I’d known ahead of time.

My hat arrived pristine. The Starter Kit showed up battered. The hair kit ships in an envelope rather than a box. Other reviewers have flagged the same thing. Everything inside was intact and safe, but it’s a little jarring to open something this expensive to find it in a dinged-up box.

The Hair Growth Fix That Doesn’t Need a Prescription

How The Price Actually Stacked Up

Leading hair growth supplements run about $88 a month. That’s over $1,000 a year, every year, for as long as you want to keep the results.

The Red Light Hat Starter Kit is a one-time purchase of $462. It pays for itself in under six months compared to what I was spending on supplements. Yes, I’ll still need to replenish the serum, but HigherDOSE has a subscribe-and-save option for that.

And if you don’t want to subscribe and are late ordering another bottle of the serum, you’re not suddenly left with nothing – the hat is still there to continue the progress.

The Last Word

I won’t pretend $462 is an impulse purchase. I stared at the price for a while before I pulled the trigger, especially after spending a ton over the years on products that eventually were abandoned in my medicine cabinet.

But a few months in, I’m genuinely glad I did. My hair isn’t suddenly back to what it was at 25, but I’m seeing way less shedding, my hair feels fuller, and I’m seeing growth in areas I’d been watching thin for years.
